Deciding on an all-inclusive resort when traveling with a family, can be one of the best decisions you can make as a parent, for your budget AND for your mental health. Our family time together is extremely limited now I’m an empty-nester. Both of my boys are forging their own lives, so when I spot a window of time for a family vacation I JUMP on the opportunity to travel together.
My boys can EAT (shocker!) and one of them can legally drink, so when we travel it’s not inexpensive to say the least. And the last thing I want is to be naggy about the fifth drink they order by the pool or give them side-eye when they are ‘starving’ an hour after lunch. When I saw the Riu Palace Peninsula – Cancun all-inclusive resort, I knew this was our place. Riu Palace Peninsula is located in the Corazone area of Cancun and is only 20km from Cancun airport. The views from most rooms are spectacular & the infinity pool overlooking the beautiful ocean is where we spent our days being looked after by friendly and attentive staff.
Staying at an all-inclusive resort is easy and mostly stress free. There’s no need to plan or budget for meals, drinks, activities or gratuities. The only extras to budget for are spa visits (yes please!), and any excursions. We visited Chichen Itza and you can find more info on that here. Resorts typically have ample of onsite activities, and knowing you won’t receive a huge bill at the end of your stay allows you to relax and stay on budget.
My boys can eat, and one of the best parts about an all-inclusive hotel is that once you’ve paid for your holiday, you don’t have to brace yourself for the bill each meal. There are also usually extensive options available so you’re never bored. The Riu Palace Peninsula offers plenty of options with a beautiful buffet restaurant stacked with fresh foods, as well as five specialty restaurants: Kabuki, Venice, Krystal, Tamales and Isla Mujeres. There’s also a swim-up bar in the pool where you can order drinks and snacks all day! Since all food and drinks are un-limited, this option is perfect for family travel – especially as the kiddos get older.
Kids programs are fantastic at all-inclusive resorts and Riu Palace Peninsula offers RiuLand, a full program of children’s entertainment every day to keep the little ones entertained. Calú, the friendly sea turtle invites families to enjoy water slides, games and competitions, and even shares a dance routine daily with the kids. Hours of the kids programs vary, and it’s easy to schedule some adult time together knowing your kids are having a blast, without the cost of a sitter.
If you’re looking to relax, there are plenty of quiet beaches and secluded spots to enjoy a cocktail under the stars. If a more festive nightlife is your thing when you travel, there’s really no need to leave the property of Riu Palace Peninsula.
The evening program offers live music and shows with a new theme every night in ‘La Latina’ theater. There’s also free entry to the on-site Pacha Discotheque which is open 6 nights per week where you can dance to live music until 2 am. All of these options are part of the all-inclusive experience.
When choosing to stay at an all-inclusive resort, besides the food, drinks and entertainment being included, most resorts include plenty of daytime activities too. Riu Palace Peninsula offers a long list of activities to enjoy each day that includes a gym, RiuFit group fitness classes, beach soccer and beach volleyball.
For water adventures it’s easy to check out a kayak, small catamaran, or body board. The water is pristine and clear, so I’d highly recommend you take advantage of the snorkeling equipment.
There are four freshwater swimming pools and a scenic infinity pool, so there really is a pool for everyone. If you prefer to snooze, read and rest in silence all day, then the adult side pool is for you.
If you’re looking for the action and daily entertainment, you’ll want to be in the main pool with the swim-up bar. I loved the Infinity pool overlooking the beach for the perfect mix of action and relaxation. And it’s close to the pool bar for refreshments. The pools are open from 8am to 7pm and the swim up bar opens at 10am. It can be tricky finding four sun loungers all together, so to avoid having to move, remember to pick a place that suits your personal needs from the outset.
The rooms at Riu Palace Peninsula have a lovely décor to match the tropical vibe of the resort, and provide a private slice of paradise. Many rooms have beautiful balconies where you can soak in the stunning ocean views, and are stocked with amenities such as a minibar, liquor dispenser, mini-fridges, and flat-screen TVs.
Gone are the days of shabby decor and sloppy food options, resorts have stepped up their all-inclusive game to provide the service and quality travelers are craving. Many all-inclusive resorts are now providing more upscale dining options and activities to cater to travelers seeking the combination of luxury and relaxation… and Riu Palace Peninsula in Cancun offers all three.
